What it Takes to Keep Your Job

Lady Luck may play a part in it, but following the tips below can increase your luck when it comes to keeping your job in this market.

Go Above and Beyond: Now is not the time to be a slacker! Morale may be down in your office because some of your colleagues have been laid off, or perhaps you feel a little disheartened because a family member or friend has recently been affected by downsizing. But don’t let this rub off on you. Take pride in your work, even if it isn’t the exact job you want right now. Be grateful you are employed and show your gratitude through your work. Show up early to the office and for meetings, take on extra assignments before being asked, and always have a great attitude.

Present Solutions and not just Problems: Management wants to know any issues that are negatively impacting the organization, but nobody wants a person who only shares doom and gloom. Demonstrate your value by taking the initiative to not only present current challenges but potential solutions to address them. Management will see you more as a solution creator and not a problem maker.

Visibility is Important: It’s one thing if your immediate boss knows and sings your praise, but it is also important to have his/her superiors know your accomplishments. It’s critical your entire organization know the value you provide them. Ask for assignments that will bring you this visibility. If protocol permits it, copy your boss’s superiors in glowing emails. Now is not the time to be shy. If your boss has heartburn over this, have a frank discussion with him/her and convey your desire to share your success. A good leader should want to share the success of the team.

Even with all this sage advice, there are no guarantees. Business is tough out there. But if you can convince your organization that you add value that only you can bring, then Lady Luck should be on your side.
